I guess that will be the real test. How much does what you're used to and brought up with influence your preference between paper and screen?

Yes, I love audio books -- but with a proviso. It's odd, but I'm quite happy to listen to history or non-fiction, but not so keen on listening to novels. Much prefer to actually read a novel.

I know how you feel, but I just can't get used to books anymore. The closest I can get to Nirvana is scanning the pages to my tablet one by one and reading that way, does slow me down a tad, but you get that authentic feel that just can't be replicated, if you'll excuse the pun.

I agree with the "the smell of printed paper" thing, but virtually unlimited free e-books makes the Kindle a no-brainer for me.

Audio books are superior in every aspect
As long as the narrator is not a cunt, or a woman

Audio books are fine for casual reading.
Or for a book you have already read, they actually can bring out something new.
Not for something you need to know first time.
For me at least.

Yes, just making my way thru Ludlum's Bourne series now. I enjoy listening to them at work, Crowley!

I find the kindle is really good for technical stuff that i need at hand without having to worry about the pages flipping etc but for reading novels, history etc i wouldnt even consider it.
does anyone listen to audio books?

This is the exact topic of a class or two I was in during a Book History and Print Culture course a few years ago.
Generally, we have been trained to read a certain way; it is easier to read quickly and we get better comprehension (studies show) when we perform the physical acts associated with reading from a codex-style book.
Interesting to see how quickly that changes with kids that are raised reading totally from digital sources.

I can relate to the 'holding a PROPER book' sentiment, but now I've got a bookcase FULL OF FUCKING BOOKS that I don't know what to do with.
It's a small bookcase (in fact it's a shelf in a cupboard), admittedly.

Love my kindle so much more comfortable to hold.
Plus I had stacks of books everywhere and they've stopped growing.
Not to mention the amount of 'free' books I get.

I am the same coffee. Bought a kindle when they came out, didn't really get into it due to, amongst other things, sun reflection and quite possibly my emerging short sightedness. I now read hardcopy books exclusively. I love the smell and feel of a real book and like turning the corners of the page when needed
